NFL Hall of Fame QB collapses

Bart Starr, 78, collapsed while giving a speech

By Bill Novak
Wisconsin State Journal

Bart Starr collapsed Tuesday morning after giving a speech at Monona Terrace Convention Center, but the legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback recovered almost immediately, a Monona Terrace official said.

Starr, 78, was speaking at the Governor's Conference on Economic Development, put on by the Wisconsin Economic Development Association.

Fran Puleo, public relations manager at Monona Terrace, said Starr had just finished his speech and was getting ready to take questions when he collapsed at the podium. "He came to right away," Puleo said. "911 was called and the emergency responders were there right away as well."

Puleo said one of the audiovisual workers at Monona Terrace, who also is a paramedic, rushed to the podium area to render aid.

"Mr. Starr was evaluated by paramedics and it was determined he didn't have to be taken to a hospital," Puleo said. "He went out to his limousine and off to the airport."

The reason for Starr's collapse was not disclosed.
