Building a defense against hypothermia

Name: EMS1 Staff

Responding to calls in cold weather increases the risks of conditions such as hypothermia, so extra measures should be taken to avoid problems. Consider the following guidelines in guarding against hypothermia:

  • Multiple layers of light, loose-fitting clothing are recommended, with particular focus on potentially exposed areas such as the hands and head.
  • You should drink plenty of fluids.
  • Any suspected cold-related conditions in yourself or crew-members should be reported immediately.

Hypothermia can occur even at relatively mild temperatures when exposure is prolonged. Symptoms include bouts of shivering, drowsiness, confusion, muddled thinking, impaired vision, shallow breathing, and loss of coordination.
