GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. - The number of supersized patients is on the rise, and so is the number of supersized stretchers to accommodate them.

Earlier this year, Stat EMS Inc. became the only Flint-area ambulance company to use an MX-Pro Stryker stretcher that's capable of transporting a patient double the usual size.

How big is big? The Pro Stryker, a cart with collapsible wheels, can hold patients weighing as much as 1,000 pounds. It's been in such constant use that Stat plans to order a second one in 2006.
