State paramedic inquiry targets Va. firefighters

Firefighters are being investigated for alleged 'falsification of clinical hours and procedures'

By Marjon Rostami
The Virginian-Pilot

SUFFOLK, Va. — The state is investigating several Suffolk firefighters after receiving complaints that they lied about their qualifications during a training program to become paramedics.

The Virginia office of Emergency Medical Services received a complaint about the firefighters in February, said Michael Berg, regulation and compliance manager for the state EMS office.

He would not release the number of firefighters involved or say whether they still are employed by the city.

The firefighters are being investigated for alleged "falsification of clinical hours and procedures " during the paramedic training.

Berg said he does not know whether the individuals were removed from the program once the investigation began.

City spokeswoman Debbie George said she could not comment on personnel matters.

Berg said he hopes the investigation will be completed in 30 days. At that time, details will become public.

Suffolk employs 45 firefighters/medical professionals according to a roster of city employees made available to The Virginian-Pilot last year.
