MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. – A trauma surgical team amputated a driver’s leg after a tractor trailer crash Tuesday.

The Intelligencer reported that the driver, who was trapped at the legs, was extricated from the vehicle’s cab after crashing against a bridge railing. EMS requested a trauma surgical team to assess if a field amputation of the legs would be possible.

The extrication took over two hours and the surgical team amputated one of the victim’s legs.

The driver was taken to a local hospital, where his condition was unknown, according to the report.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Motorists were stuck behind the scene of the accident for more than four hours as responders worked to free the driver and clear a lane of travel, according to the report.
