Medic's holiday drive blankets seniors with warmth

For the past six years, one medic has made an effort to ensure senior citizens in her community are not forgotten during the holidays

York Region

CANADA — For the past six years, a York Region paramedic has made an effort to ensure senior citizens in our community are not forgotten during the holidays.

Each year on Christmas Eve, Markham resident Helen Galanais hands out hand-knitted and new blankets to seniors in our three regional hospitals — Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill and Markham Stouffville Hospital.

“I wanted to do something to help the elderly, who might have been forgotten,” said the mother of two. “Christmas is the hardest time of the year, especially if you are alone.” This year, she donated close to 80 blankets, each wrapped in ribbon and made to look like a present.
