FDNY may hire ex-cons

An anti discrimination settlement will force department to consider applicants who racked up good-behavior record in prison

The New York Post

NEW YORK —  The FDNY will consider hiring convicted felons with a "Certificate ofGood Conduct" from the state parole board, the department said in a notice posted last week. Such applicants will get a "special review."

The notice to potential applicants includes the text of a state law aimed at stopping employment discrimination against ex-cons who have done time and stayed clean.

Marcella Andryuk Marcella Andryuk Tuesday, January 29, 2013 7:59:57 PM I dont agree with the second chance, there can do anything at any given time
Lynn Magnuson Lynn Magnuson Tuesday, January 29, 2013 8:03:53 PM I don't have a problem with ex convicts being able to gain employment as firefighters as long as they are "reformed"... clean and sober, staying away from the criminal associations and practices which got them into prison, etc. The majority of people who've done time come out, and never get in trouble again. The biggest thing that gets in their way is when society puts roadblocks in their way. The only kind of offender I would be uncomfortable with in EMS or Fire work would be someone with a serious drug problem which is unresolved, and pedophiles/abusers.
Jake Stein Jake Stein Tuesday, January 29, 2013 8:42:17 PM "to remedy racial imbalances". By hiring ex-cons, is that a racist statement which makes the assumption that you have to hire an ex-con in order to meet the race balance. Aren't there people of different races/color who aren't ex-cons? Aren't there any black or hispanics people who are not ex-cons who might want to be a FF?
Josh Buck Josh Buck Tuesday, January 29, 2013 8:52:22 PM To, "remedy racial imbalances" they have to hire felons? Is that not a racist comment in itself?
Ed Stclaire Ed Stclaire Tuesday, January 29, 2013 9:30:54 PM Seriously???!
Tony Wayne Hayes Jr. Tony Wayne Hayes Jr. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 12:16:50 AM This is should not be allowed. My state does not allow Felony EMT or Paramedic which is required by employer to be maintained
Logan Loftin Logan Loftin Wednesday, January 30, 2013 9:07:24 AM I would be more apt to agreee with this if it were non-vilolent, non-drug related.
Layne Rice Layne Rice Wednesday, January 30, 2013 3:48:24 PM so can anybody else!
Layne Rice Layne Rice Wednesday, January 30, 2013 3:48:56 PM Well put

Dan Sousa Dan Sousa Thursday, January 31, 2013 5:34:43 PM This is F'n disgusting. God Damn Veterans can't gain employment as a FF. F'n bullshit!
