Utah teen sunbathing in driveway dies, run over by truck

She was listening to her iPod and didn't hear the truck as it backed out of the garage; the driver was her sister who didn't realize she was there

The Associated Press

SYRACUSE, Utah — According to a family spokesman, a Utah teenager has died after being run over by a pickup truck while sunbathing on a residential driveway.

Lance Hamblin says 15-year-old Marli Hamblin died Sunday afternoon at a hospital, two days after she suffered head injuries in Syracuse, 25 miles north of Salt Lake City.

Police say she was listening to her iPod and didn't hear the truck as it backed out of the garage.

Investigators say the driver was a family member who didn't realize the girl was on the driveway.

They say the driver was "really struggling" after the accident and won't be charged.

The driver's name and relationship to the teen weren't released.

Heath Corey Heath Corey Tuesday, August 12, 2014 8:21:26 AM I have been a paramedic for 19 years and these calls are always tragic. You always feel bad for everyone involved. This can happen to anyone at any time. I'm not sure of the exact year but I do believe by 2019 all vehicles sold in the US will have the back up cameras installed. This is due to accidents such as this. Too many little kids are being backed over. Especially in the big SUV's and pick ups . You can't see rot quiet a distance behind you. It kills me to see some of the ass comments here. It's obvious some of you didn't watch the video because it says it was her older sister was the driver. It was an attached garage and the girl killed did not have a habit of laying in the driveway. As a father of two teen age girls I have to think she probably went outside and thought to herself, there is more sun here so she just laid her blanked down there. The driver was most likely watching her drivers mirror as she backed out like most people do. The angle the girl was laying compared to the position of her head most likely lined up. Looking at the picture of her I would estimate her to be 5' tall a small girl. As for the head injury, there is a part of the brain called the medulla. It's in the brain stem and it controls vital function such as the rate and depth of respirations, heart rate and force of heart contraction and it also controls blood vessel constriction and dilation. This is why she was able to survive for a while. The brain is a very awesome organ. I have been on calls where you think people will survive and they die and others you are trying to do everything to save someone and you leave the hospital knowing in your mind they will probably die and those patients are the ones that will walk into our ambulance base 6 months later to thank you for everything you did. I pray for the older sister who hit her because she is going to need some thery at some point. She will now have to live with this for the rest of her life.

David Keplinger David Keplinger Tuesday, August 12, 2014 10:52:55 AM If you're in a truck and she is laying in a small chair or towel on the driveway, she's going to be in a blind spot. Even in my truck it's really hard to see behind me a person walking let alone a person laying behind you in a driveway. The girl was also probably laying in the middle to where you couldn't see her out of the side mirrors or center mirrior and I doubt that you get out of your car or truck and look behind you before you back up. Like everyone else you probably check the mirrors and look over your shoulder but even doing that you're not going to see someone lying down behind you. Prayers goes out to the family.

Elena Alexa Elena Alexa Tuesday, August 12, 2014 6:40:59 PM My question is why sunbathe in the driveway? Was there not enough grass? Its tragic and I've seen and heard worse....but whose at fault? Both her n driver or no one....its clear that the driver never looks to see whats around them and what they did proved that.....
