911 calls shed light on death of NM veteran in hospital cafeteria

"We called our rapid response here at the hospital but unfortunately they won’t respond to him because he’s out of the main medical building," the caller said at one point

Albuquerque Journal

ALBUQUERQUE — The first of two 911 callers from Albuquerque’s Veterans Affairs Medical Center remained calm as Vietnam veteran Jim Napoleon Garcia lay dying on June 30 in the center’s cafeteria.

“It’s the canteen service and the patient coded, nonresponsive, chest compressions right now,” the unidentified female caller said.

She told the Albuquerque Fire Department dispatcher the victim was “bleeding actively out of his mouth and nose.”

Amy Rohmiller Amy Rohmiller Friday, July 11, 2014 6:37:52 PM Good job by the VA police, making sure they could find him. So disappointed that a table of doctors didn't want to stop eating to help.
Shari Orrick Shari Orrick Friday, July 11, 2014 8:51:44 PM After reading the full version I was very upset by a fire chief saying it is better for ems to respond than put him on a gurney and rush him to the er. Let's see 10 minutes to get a gurney to him and him to the er or 10 minutes for ems to arrive, 20 minutes on scene to work and then load and transport. I think I would rather be dragged to the er within a 5 minute walk than wait. Jmho.
