WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —Two teenagers remained hospitalized Tuesday after being hit by a Surry County ambulance when they apparently rode into its path late Monday night.

Jamaal Deshawn Shell, 16, and Daquanta Janeele Mack, 15, tried to cross in the 5200 block of University Parkway around 9:30 p.m. when the two, neither of which were wearing helmets, rode out in front of the oncoming ambulance, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department. The ambulance, which was traveling south, was not running emergency traffic.

The two teens were transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center where they were listed in critical condition Tuesday.
