DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. — An ambulance crashed head-on into a car in Desert Hot Springs, killing two people and injuring four others.

Palm Drive north of Interstate 10 remains closed this morning as the California Highway Patrol continues investigating last night's deadly crash.

A Ford Thunderbird and an American Medical Response ambulance responding to an emergency with lights flashing and siren blaring collided head-on shortly before 9 p.m.

CHP Officer Craig Rentle says alcohol may be a factor. Witnesses say the Thunderbird, carrying four people, was "weaving and driving recklessly" prior to the crash.

The car ran a red light at Palm Drive and Interstate 10 before colliding with the ambulance, which was knocked onto its side trapping two paramedics inside.

The driver of the Thunderbird and a front seat passenger died on impact. One of the back seat passengers was ejected from the vehicle.
