FORT WAYNE, Ind. — An ambulance transporting a patient to St. Joseph Hospital was involved in a crash downtown Monday afternoon.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. Monday at West Main Street and Fairfield Avenue. The Three Rivers Ambulance Authority vehicle was traveling with its emergency lights and sirens on while transporting a patient to St. Joseph Hospital, operations manager Brad Witte said. It was unknown why the patient was going to the hospital.

The ambulance was headed west on Main Street, made a stop at the red light at the intersection and then proceeded through the red light just three blocks from the hospital.

A black Pontiac Grand Am headed south on Fairfield Avenue entered the intersection just as the ambulance was proceeding, and the two vehicles collided. The driver of the Pontiac was not injured and was cited for the crash.

A medic and a firefighter who were in the rear of the ambulance were taken to the St. Joseph Hospital emergency room and treated for minor injuries. The ambulance patient was picked up by another ambulance and continued to the hospital. The patient’s condition was not known, Witte said.

Police directed traffic in all directions on Main Street and Fairfield Avenue while the scene was cleared.
