New WMD Screening Tool Spreading Across U.S.
State/Local Governments Not Waiting for Development of Complex Technology
Annapolis, Md – First responders in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, will soon be able to diagnose patients for exposure to chemical, biological, or radiation – without expensive sensor devices or extensive training.
Anne Arundel County first responders are using Elyxer Field Data Collection System with ThreatScreen integration, software that runs on the portable digital devices carried by paramedics, fire fighters and other first responders. Upon arriving on a scene, the first responder simply types fills in the patient side diagnostic information. If Elyxer detects a possible agent in the standard diagnosis the system prompt the user to complete the Threatscreen expert system for agent identification.
ThreatScreen’s “expert systems software,” using information provided by leading physicians, “diagnoses” the problem. Because the system is easy to use, reliable and relatively inexpensive – unlike complex sensors and detectors – first responders can screen every person with whom they interact, even when weapons of mass destruction are not suspected.
By integrating this kind of surveillance into the day-to-day work habits of large numbers of first responders, jurisdictions are more likely to detect danger before it is too late for the most effective response.
“We wanted to ensure our emergency medical technicians and hospital emergency room staff could rapidly provide an opinion on whether one of our patients in Mississippi had been exposed to something outside of the norm. We needed a simple, effective solution that protects our citizens today – not a complex and expensive system that could take years to get,” said Jim Craig, Director, Health Protection, (full title with Mississippi), who selected ThreatScreen. Mississippi announced it has renewed its ThreatScreen contract after a successful year of deployment.
Anne Arundel County – home to sensitive sites such as the U.S. Naval Academy, National Security Agency, and Baltimore Washington International Airport – is integrating ThreatScreen software system with Healthware’s Elyxer Data Collection, ( E – Run Sheet) to provide early detection of emerging infectious diseases, weapons of mass destruction, and hazardous materials. The county’s groundbreaking project will automatically search ambulance records and match them with hospital and other reports as part of “syndromic surveillance system” to detect health trends across the county. This will allow officials to detect and react to threats far more quickly than currently possible.
“We are investing in ThreatScreen so we catch any problems at the earliest possible stage. This is part of our commitment to ensure the safety and security of our citizens from all hazards, be they natural or man-made,” said County Executive Janet S. Owens.
"We are very excited about Realinterface technology," said Anne Arundel Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell. "We are anxious to put it to use with our emergency medical and other first responders."
