Globalstar Signs Hardware Agreement to Expand Satellite Simplex Data Coverage
MILPITAS, CA - Globalstar, Inc. (NASDAQ:GSAT), a leading provider of mobile satellite voice and data services to businesses, governments, and individuals, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Radyne Corporation business unit AeroAstro, to purchase AeroAstro’s SENS (Sensor Enabled Notification System) Appliqués that will be used to further expand Globalstar’s Simplex data geographic coverage and grow its Simplex data customer capacity in Asia and Latin America.
According to the agreement, AeroAstro will provide Globalstar with the asset tracking satellite downlink decoder racks, spares kits, and the necessary software upgrades needed to enhance the capability of those Globalstar satellite gateway ground stations not currently providing Simplex data coverage. Deliveries of the hardware and software upgrades are scheduled to begin later this year.
Globalstar’s highly reliable Simplex data network is used to support a variety of aviation flight-following, emergency asset, fleet and personal tracking applications. Simplex data modem integrated solutions are also used for a number of remote monitoring and alarm applications, both within and beyond the reach of traditional wireless and terrestrial infrastructure. Information such as GPS location co-ordinates, remote status and other sensor information can be reliably sent to customers using the Globalstar Simplex network. “We are very pleased to once again be working with AeroAstro for their equipment has historically provided Globalstar with the ability to provide our customers with an extremely reliable way of transmitting information over the Globalstar satellite network,” said Jay Monroe, Chairman and CEO of Globalstar, Inc. Mr. Monroe added, “This investment further demonstrates our continued commitment to expand our data capabilities and coverage in order to support all of Globalstar’s Simplex data integrated and reseller solutions as well as those of our subsidiary company SPOT Inc.”
The SENS Appliqué, an AeroAstro proprietary digital signal processing infrastructure component installed at key Globalstar ground stations, receives and decodes asset tracking, location and data monitoring information from remote Simplex integrated modems solutions via the Globalstar satellite network. The received information can then be processed and distributed to users via the Internet. Globalstar’s constellation of 40 operational satellites is completely stable in supporting Globalstar Simplex data satellite products and asset tracking services. Recent monitoring tests indicate that within the primary coverage area, the Globalstar Simplex data network is currently operating at a successful transmission rate of greater than 99 percent.
