Medic-Vaults New Dual Control Safe Prevents Drug Theft From Ambulances

Helps save ambulance companies thousands of dollars, controls misuse and theft

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Narcotics theft from ambulances is a rising problem in many U.S. cities. In fact, some states are requiring dual-access controls to prevent theft and misuse.

A new solution has recently hit the market. The Medic-Vault, a product of Secured, LLC out of Memphis, Tenn. offers the ultimate in security with dual access control and a thorough audit trail.

“Almost every day there’s another report of missing narcotics from an ambulance,” says Secured, LLC CEO John Slayton. “Whether it’s misuse or theft, this is a growing -- and costly -- problem for ambulance companies and city fire stations. The Medic-Vault can virtually eliminate the problem.”

The Medic-Vault offers dual access control using a combination PIN number and proximity card. Companies can install the vaults in a fleet of ambulances and control hundreds of vault doors for up to 10,000 users. The vaults conveniently bolt directly to the ambulance chassis and connect to the existing 12-volt system.
“The medic-vault is rugged and durable,” said Chief Shannon Jones of the Memphis Fire Department. “The system offers great accountability and excellent reports, and the guys provide solutions to any problem that has arisen, excellent to work with” said Jones referring to Slayton and his business partner, Duke Leyman.

A live stream video camera is also available to install to the roof of the ambulance for additional security and enhanced patient care. The camera offers a visual record of exactly who accessed the safe, recording the actions of those entering.

The state-of-the-art camera also allows for two-way communication with emergency room staff to give the attending physician the ability to view the patient and give instruction directly to paramedics. This two-way communication can enhance patient care in particularly critical situations and possibly save lives.
The 360-degree panoramic view captures the entire ambulance offering greater visibility, security and premier patient care.

The Medic-Vault safe and camera are the brainchild of Slayton who was approached by the Jericho, New York fire commissioner in 2008 to create a true, dual-control access safe. After years of development and testing, the Medic-Vault was created.

The Medic-Vault is available in a variety of colors and three sizes:

  • 8 inches tall x 12 inches wide x 8 inches deep
  • 59 inches tall x 21 inches wide x 15 inches deep
  • 23 inches tall x 14 inches wide x 13 inches deep
