Ga. paramedic dies after ambulance crash

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A Douglas County paramedic has died of his injuries following a Sunday morning wreck involving an ambulance and another vehicle, authorities said.
Douglas County spokesman Wes Tallon told the AJC that Paul Holmes, 37, died Monday morning at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was airlifted following the wreck.
The crash happened about 12:15 a.m. Sunday on Anneewakee Road at Chapel Hill Road when the ambulance collided with a car and overturned.
Tallon said Holmes and another paramedic, Daniel Young, were responding to a vehicle fire with injuries when the wreck happened.
Young was also injured and is recuperating at home.
Holmes, who had been with the Douglas County Fire/EMS Department since May 2008, had recently completed firefighter training, receiving his firefighter certification this month.
He is survived by his wife, Jamie, and 4-year-old daughter, Alexandria.
"Serving as a fireman-paramedic-EMT is a calling, and those who respond to the call put their lives on the line every day," said Douglas County Commission Chairman Tom Worthan. "Paul was responding to someone who needed aid, and in doing so, lost his own life."
Georgia State Patrol spokesman Paul Cosper said Monday that the GSP's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team would investigate and their findings would be turned over to the Douglas County district attorney for a determination on whether charges would be filed.
