Wis. mom delivers baby at home with help of EMTs

EMS director: 'Within minutes [her contractions] were only minutes apart. We knew we weren't going to be transporting her"

AUGUSTA, Wisc. — It's not every day that an emergency medical technician gets the chance to deliver a baby.

When Augusta EMTs Kris Johnson and Kris and Kurt Grimm responded to Amanda Bluem's call at about 8:30 p.m. April 7, they were expecting to transport her to the hospital. But when they arrived at Bluem's residence at about 9 p.m., her delivery had progressed so quickly that her contractions were only a minute apart.

"Within a minute, they were 30 seconds apart," said Johnson, Augusta EMS director. "At that point, we knew we weren't going to be transporting her."
