Video: Elevator flies 30 floors in 15 seconds, man injured

It crashed into the roof of the building, and the man suffered head and leg injuries

By EMS1 Staff

Providencia, Chile — A man was seriously injured Friday when a malfunctioning elevator rose more than 30 floors in 15 seconds.

The surveillance video shows José Vergara Acevedo, 31, entering the elevator on the first floor of a building at Bustamante Community Park in Providencia, Fox News reports.

He is shown desperately pushing buttons to try to stop it, before it slams into the building’s roof. The elevator remained at the top floor, and responders rescued him. He suffered head and leg injuries, and is in stable condition

Jay Jay Jay Jay Monday, June 09, 2014 10:31:19 AM All you have to do is jump right when you're at the last floor. Everyone knows that.
Eden Darigan Almog Eden Darigan Almog Monday, June 09, 2014 10:51:12 AM Wouldn't that only work if the elevator were falling, vs. going up?? If he jumped, he would hit his head even harder since he was close to the ceiling of the elevator. Lol
Austin Tyler Frye Austin Tyler Frye Monday, June 09, 2014 11:15:34 AM lol also, you can't do that, even though it sounds plausible. The centripetal force would still cause you to be traveling at nearly the same speed as the car when it hit the ground.
MarieJoyce Aquilizan MarieJoyce Aquilizan Monday, June 09, 2014 12:28:16 PM 15 seconds in a panic. He was probably still trying to figure out what was going on.
Kevin Sweeney Kevin Sweeney Monday, June 09, 2014 1:55:08 PM Elevators over 3 stories don't fall down, they go up because they counterweighted.
Jeffrey Sanders Jeffrey Sanders Monday, June 09, 2014 3:28:04 PM Dollar signs dollar signs dollar signs. He will never have to work again and all he had to do was go on a redneck thrill ride.
Jade Levinson Jade Levinson Monday, June 09, 2014 6:31:46 PM Austin Tyler Frye I'm pretty sure he's kidding, people.
Jade Levinson Jade Levinson Monday, June 09, 2014 8:47:27 PM Probably not. Chile is not nearly as litigious as the States. And you make it sound like he intended for this to happen.
Jeffrey Sanders Jeffrey Sanders Monday, June 09, 2014 9:24:33 PM Seriously that is your near sighted perception of what I said. No one intends to slam into the top of a building in an elevator libtard.
Jade Levinson Jade Levinson Monday, June 09, 2014 9:26:16 PM Jeffrey Sanders Libtard, that's a new one.
HyeSung Joung HyeSung Joung Monday, June 09, 2014 10:41:53 PM you are going to go through the elevator ceiling lol
Ashley Stoehr Ashley Stoehr Wednesday, June 11, 2014 10:28:11 AM If they do fall, you're supposed to lie on your back and hope nothing punctures the floor. Good luck planning that in free fall... (I may have read up on elevators...)
