2 students' fingers torn off in tug-of-war game

The students were participating in a homecoming celebration activity

Associated Press

SOUTH EL MONTE, Calif. — Authorities in Southern California say a boy and a girl had fingers torn off during a game of tug-of-war at their high school.

Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Miguel Garcia told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that doctors will try to reattach the fingers belonging to two South El Monte High School students.

School district official Edward Zuniga declined to identify the students, but the Tribune reports the girl is a senior on the soccer team and the boy is a football player.

Zuniga says the students were participating in a lunchtime activity celebrating homecoming Monday.

Authorities didn't say how many fingers were lost or provide details on how the game resulted in the injuries.

Jake Stein Jake Stein Wednesday, February 06, 2013 9:04:28 AM I am sure these two young people are laughing also. Some in EMS need to get a grip on the comments they post on a public page. Having a sense of humor and making fun of kids who have had their fingers torn off are two very separate things. Time and place are important. Seriously....This is a tragic and probably a life changing event for them especially if they had athletic scholarships lined up for college. Even learning to write or type on electronic devices might be have to start all over and let's not forget the pain and many months of physical therapy trying to get reattached fingers to work again.
