Dean Drake Dean Drake Wednesday, November 14, 2012 2:22:29 PM There is one of these types of dogs down the street from me that thankfully is within a concrete block wall. Occasionally, it knocks a block loose as it is clamoring to try to get at people walking past. The neighbor says, "don't worry... the worst thing that could happen is that the dog would lick you to death!" Yeah... I really take comfort in THAT statement. I'm sure glad there is a concrete wall keeping that dog in.

Dean Drake Dean Drake Wednesday, November 14, 2012 3:06:18 PM I do the same Paul. Yelling: "BAD DOG!" just isn't going to work in those situations. I am so sorry for the victim. What a horrible way to go. Having had numerous dog confrontations (and having to employ pepper spray on more occasions than anyone should ever have to) I can say that I have respect for and fear dogs more than I do most other creatures.

Bsi Rav Bsi Rav Wednesday, November 14, 2012 3:19:26 PM There is more to that story. Dogs don't just snap and kill their owners especially a Mastiff. She must have done something to provoke the dog.
Paul Edward Morris Paul Edward Morris Wednesday, November 14, 2012 3:25:29 PM I don't fear Doogies , I actually love them. Yet, I will dispatch them if they turn vicious... A Doggie owner did this in Kirkland in a Public Park when another Dog wanted to make another Doggie their Dinner... The guy had a CPL, and His Handgun. YAY for this guy... Cops didn't like it. They even said they were going to throw the Book at him.... However, they backed down when the public was outraged at the liberal Antigun cops...

Debbie Knoll Reindt Debbie Knoll Reindt Wednesday, November 14, 2012 4:11:37 PM I would be interested in knowing what type of mastiff she had. English mastiffs are usually docile, while some other mastiff breeds can be more aggressive. Writers of stories such as this need to be very specific.
Lynn Morgan Lynn Morgan Wednesday, November 14, 2012 4:34:50 PM There are at least 6 different breeds of "mastiffs" Was it a Bullmastiff, a Presa, a Cane Corso, a Boerboel, a Dogo, a Neapolitian Mastiff, an English Mastiff, or some type of mix? To say it was a mastiff does not really tell the whole story as all of these breeds have VERY different personality traits.
Scott Heaney Scott Heaney Wednesday, November 14, 2012 4:44:47 PM What tyoe of Mastiff? There are over 20 breeds of Mastiffs.

Melissa Tiede Hyde Melissa Tiede Hyde Thursday, November 15, 2012 9:59:24 PM Why do they need to "run this type of dog down"? You don't even know the entire story! There are MANY, MANY breeds of Mastiffs at least 22, the mastiff usually refers to the English Mastiff which is a very docile dog. Was this a bullmastiff, they can be more aggressive? A cane corso can be very aggressive, as can a neapolitan can also be very agressive. Most mastiffs do NOT need to be trained as a guard dog, they have that instinct, yet people get them and train them to be mean and it ruins the breed. This lady had recently adopted the dog, what is it's history? Was it abused by the former owners or the owners before that?
Melissa Tiede Hyde Melissa Tiede Hyde Thursday, November 15, 2012 10:30:17 PM Since 1982 there has been 4 deaths by a mastiff, and 2 of those were in packs of other dogs where they can't confirm it was a mastiff. 15 deaths total by other mastiff breeds, pitbulls had 209, rott's had 78, german shepard 13, husky 22, lab 3. Should we get rid of labs because they have almost as many deaths as the mastiff. According to these stats, for every 50 pit deaths there was a mastiff death. So how can you even compair them together. It would be a closer to compair the deaths from the dachschund (1), the pomeranian (1), the schnauzer (1), and the chihuahua (1), the golden retriever and jack russell each have 2. Should we run down those breeds as well, since the numbers are so close to the mastiff?
Melissa Tiede Hyde Melissa Tiede Hyde Thursday, November 15, 2012 10:42:09 PM This is FAR from the entire story! There are MANY, MANY breeds of Mastiffs at least 22, the mastiff usually refers to the English Mastiff which is a very docile dog. Was this a bullmastiff, they can be more aggressive? A cane corso can be very aggressive, as can a neapolitan. Melissa Tiede Hyde Melissa Tiede Hyde Thursday, November 15, 2012 10:51:09 PM I have a LARGE male EM, 220lbs. Our female passed last year and she was 180lb fluffly, she came to us from a rescue, where she was very abused. We also raised 2 other mastiffs that were abused. I have NEVER seen an ounce of agression out of them, even when my child is playing "rough" with them. The worst injury he has even recieved from any of them was a bath in slobber! I suspect that this is not a EM breed, the dog came to this family from a relative, so maybe the dog was abused prior to either family getting the dog. I agree something is strange.
