EMT back injuries declining, still problematic

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — As a young firefighter and paramedic in Springdale, Bentonville Fire Chief Dan White was stretching when he felt a little pull in his back.

Later that day, he was moving a patient off a couch when his back suffered a spasm.

That injury, relatively common among emergency medical service workers, led to occasional back problems for years, White said. Pulling a gallon of milk out of the fridge once threw his back.
