How I survived internal decapitation – and got to thank those who saved me

A year after Rachel Bailey severed her skull from her spine during a car accident, she got to meet her rescuers in September to say, 'Thank you'

Editor's note: As part of our year-end coverage, we look back at some of 2012's biggest news stories and reconnect with some of those involved. In this exclusive article, Rachel Bailey talks about the day in September she was able to thank the firefighters who saved her life after she suffered an internal decapitation during a car crash a year earlier.

By Rachel Bailey

I still can't remember anything two days prior to the accident and five weeks afterwards. The first thing I can remember thinking after those five weeks is feeling that everything was going be OK — that's my first memory.

I felt an almost indescribable peace, that I was in good hands and that everything was going to work out.

In August, the month before the anniversary of my accident, I decided that I wanted to go to the station and show the people who saved my life how I was doing and honor them.

In September, a date was set to meet them. I was kind of excited. It was good to know I'd be able to fill in the gaps.

When I first went to the station, I was met by Captain Wayde Kline, who was at the crash scene that night. I had already met him after the crash when he spoke at our Trauma Survivors Network at John C. Lincoln Hospital. At that time, he asked us to come to dinner at the fire station and meet the whole crew who responded to her accident.

At the station, he introduced me to the rest of the team who saved me that night — Mark Heltzel, Mike Doran and Moe Fatongiatau — and we talked about everything that happened.

We talked about their observation of the accident and what they were thinking, how they figured out that I was critically injured, and how they were smart enough not to move me before stabilizing my neck.

That night had all kind of been a mystery to me. Meeting them that day at the fire station made me feel very grateful that I had them on my side that night when I needed them the most.

Firefighters have one of the most important jobs in the world. They are the first responders and what they do matters immensely.

Today, I feel great. I am still doing physical therapy eight hours a day, four days a week – it's like a full-time job. But I feel strong and I feel I am getting better every day.

I am going back to John C. Lincoln Hospital, where I spent a month in the Intensive Care Unit, where I am involved in their Trauma Survivors Support Network and visit patients who have suffered traumatic injuries to encourage them.

Jim Gecz Jim Gecz Friday, December 28, 2012 12:41:59 PM An amazing save.
Cameron Seisan Cameron Seisan Friday, December 28, 2012 3:10:19 PM God was by her side, and along side the ones who saved her. God bless the Medics.
Aaron Farmer Aaron Farmer Friday, December 28, 2012 5:20:02 PM She had amazing, well-trained help and a possibility of survival. God had nothing to do with that. To say that implies that he allowed the original accident and her suffering to happen, and that he doesn't give a $h1t about victims that don't survive (apparently b/c he isn't by their side). Please don't take offense, just stating the obvious...
Friday, December 28, 2012 6:01:14 PM Aaron Farmer that is ridiculous. You don't know anything about God, and don't care to know either. You have your right to your opinion, but its like an ant trying to argue with a professor. Just be thankful that she's alive because it could have been someone you care about. If someone wants to believe that it was God who saved her, in conjunction with the medics, what hurt is that to you?
Aaron Farmer Aaron Farmer Saturday, December 29, 2012 1:05:31 AM I am definitely thankful that she survived, my apologies for putting that aside in my post, lets just give thanks and credit where it's due. I don't question being entitled to our own opinions, but we're not entitled to our own facts. When we put our opinions out on a public forum we shouldn't be so naive to think they won't be challenged, nor be offended when they are. And 24 years as a minister... I know enough about god.
Lynda Carter Lynda Carter Saturday, December 29, 2012 5:01:53 AM Apparently you know nothing about the real God.
Ws Ros Ws Ros Saturday, December 29, 2012 5:16:16 AM Aaron Farmer Mr. Farmer who do you think give the heart and skill to people in trauma training. If it wasn't for God they would not be allowed to assess trauma scenes the right way. I think GOD he directs our path. As Fire Personnel I pray every shift that he send me where I am needed, but that the control is all His (God). Angels watch over all of us, but GOD is the only one that saves. People just like to take credit where they should give him thanks and praise.
Phil Bowman Phil Bowman Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:21:25 AM There always has to be somebody that hijacks a thread for their own agenda. Why can't you just comment on the girl's determination and the skills and dedication of the medics, and if someone else wants to thank a personal deity, leave it alone.
Lee Eakin Lee Eakin Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:24:25 AM FROM YOUR REMARKS IT DOES NOT SOUND LIKE YOU KNOW GOD AT ALL Aaron just sayin'
Danny R. Altman Danny R. Altman Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:42:07 AM Aaron,I was about to blast away at you as Paul did, I believe He is Right in what He said. People Cling to every thread of Holiness & Hope they have when faced with this Injury or any possible life ending Injury/Illness. As a Minister your sure to remember Job and all the things that God allowed Satan to do to him for Him to consantly Praise God all the way till Satan Gave up and God Healed Him and Blessed Him beyond measure. And as a Minister you have got to believe every work written in the Bible,so why is it so hard to believe God Allowed the accident as well as allowing the 1st responders to all work as a team and do everything just the right way,and Heal this Young Lady, where she can be a Witness to all people to the Power of God. Why is this so Hard to Believe. I am a Paramedic in N.C. & in E.M.S. for over 30 years. I've seen this Kind of Miricle happen Many, Many times. As a Medic I say this Prayer before every shift " Lord Bless this day and Bless it with me in it,and Please do not allow anything to happen today You & I can't take Of AMEN". He has answered this Prayer so many times. Just My Opinion as well. It does appear you may have lost some of your focus as a Minister, I do not say that as a Judgement, its just that I know a Little about God Too. AMEN
Phil Bowman Phil Bowman Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:22:13 AM Brave girl, dedicated, well trained EMS! Great job all!
Clinton Randolph Clinton Randolph Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:24:35 AM Guardian Angels..........a true miracle.
Rae Williams Rae Williams Saturday, December 29, 2012 11:06:01 AM God, our greatest healer gave them the knowledege of what to do in this situatuon. God has everything to do with every event. Praise be to God, first responders, EMT's, Paramedics, Doctors, nurses. But first and foremost hanks and praise be to God..
Mike Mc Grath-Bryan Mike Mc Grath-Bryan Saturday, December 29, 2012 11:51:47 AM There is no god, please give the due credit to these hard-working men and women for what they do for others.
Sean Campbell Sean Campbell Saturday, December 29, 2012 11:47:59 AM Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just because you don't agree with them doesnt make them any less intelligent. Just because I choose not to partake in your voodoo religion doesn't mean you can't freely go about your own life. Besides isn't the biggest teaching out of your book is to forgive others. So please, forgive me.
Sean Campbell Sean Campbell Saturday, December 29, 2012 11:48:42 AM Oh and good save boys and girls!
Teresa Landin-Broullire Teresa Landin-Broullire Saturday, December 29, 2012 1:41:03 PM sorry Mike Mc Grath-Bryan there is a God and he is amazing.. Credit is given to God like Rae stated He gave the knowledge of what to do....God has a plan for her life.... \o/ Praise God...
Kyle Falkenbach Kyle Falkenbach Saturday, December 29, 2012 2:26:55 PM L.O.L. every time the comments is religious people talking god and others saying STFU. Too funny.
Melody Juarez Melody Juarez Saturday, December 29, 2012 7:06:20 PM I feel we have a brain and we have to learn everything we have in this field and we can ask for Gods guidance but my knowledge came from hard study and dedication. I will never believe God makes accidents, people kill other people, children die at the hands of their parents or a friend, a small child being raped, children that die from cancer, it just happens and IT'S NOT GODS WILL!!!! The work I do is from the knowledge I've gained from GREAT TEACHERS and a heart and soul dedicated to 34 years in the emergency field. We can thank our Lord for everything that happens that turns out well but what about the bad, tragic endings!!!!
Linda Staszek Linda Staszek Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:51:20 PM "God Is Holding You Closely Always...And If You Do Not Feel God Is Present...Just Ask Him For Help...As You Know! I Will Add You To My Prayers
Kyle Falkenbach Kyle Falkenbach Sunday, December 30, 2012 8:05:40 AM I lol'd. Way to stay on topic.
