LAFD ambulance patients' information leaked

An employee with the ambulance billing firm is suspected to have stolen Social Security numbers and birthdays of patients

LOS ANGELES — A criminal investigation has been launched to determine if confidential patient information was stolen from those who rode in LAFD ambulances.

The LAFD has started informing prior patients that their personal information, like Social Security numbers and birthdays may have been accessed "deliberately and maliciously" according to the Los Angeles Times.

An employee with Advanced Data Processing Inc., the company that provides ambulance billing services to the city is suspected to be responsible.

The notifications that patients have received say that the stolen information was used to file fraudulent tax returns.

Twenty-six people have received these notifications and it is estimated that 900 people may have fallen victim to the information breach.
