Medic chases drunk driver who sped off with kids

Once the medic woke up the driver who was slumped in his car, he immediately drove off

By EMS1 Staff

FLINT, Mich. — A paramedic gave chase to an allegedly drunk man after he drove off with two young children inside his car.

Shawn J. Buterakos, 39, is charged with third-degree fleeing and eluding and operating under the influence of liquor with minors in the vehicle, according to Mlive.

Early Sunday morning, a county paramedic deputy responded to a report of a driver slumped over in the driver's seat of car.

The paramedic reportedly found Buterakos sleeping with two young children aged 1 and 3 in the backseat. When the paramedic woke Buterakos up, he immediately stepped on the gas pedal and drove off.

The paramedic gave chase for about a mile, Buterakos speeding along a highway and running red lights.

Mlive reports that Buterakos finally pulled over and registered a 0.25 percent blood alcohol content, three times the legal limit. Police also found an opioid painkiller in his car.

Buterakos was arraigned on Wednesday and is held on $10,000 bond.

The children's mother has been in custody since Sept. on allegations that she absconded from probation.

The children were not injured.
