Porn star turned EMT could be in trouble over racy past

Harmony Rose appeared in more than 200 pornographic films between 2004 and 2010, is training with Va. rescue squad

By EMS1 Staff

ROANOKE, Va. — A volunteer EMT trainee's previous career as a porn star is attracting the attention of senior officials in Va.

Harmony Rose (born Tracy Rolan), 29, who appeared in more than 200 pornographic films between 2004 and 2010, is training with the Cave Spring Rescue Squad in Roanoke, Va., according to the Huffington Post.

Fire Chief Rich Burch contacted the county attorney when Roanoke Fire & Rescue employees alerted him to Rose's past, said Director of Public Information Teresa Hall.

Attorney Paul M. Mahoney replied in a letter saying that the county does not usually get involved in the decisions of volunteer rescue squads but "anything that results in public ridicule of the volunteer squads... must be avoided."

He also recommended that Chief Burch "supports the decision of the volunteer chief if she decides to terminate the membership of [Rose]."

But nearly all of the 500 or so comments that appear under the story on the reporting TV station's Facebook page support Rose continuing work with the squad.

"It's not like she was doing porn in the squad building," Theodore Hughes said.

Elizabeth Miller Elizabeth Miller Tuesday, July 17, 2012 8:38:49 AM Why is Burch creating problems for himself? The 'public' wouldn't be up in arms if he wasn't alerting them. If she had robbed over 200 banks, or killed over 200 puppies, he might have a beef.
John Frey John Frey Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:06:45 PM what's it matter that she was a porn star? Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals is going to as well.

Michael Banks Michael Banks Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:07:52 PM why should her past matter.nobody with a medical emergency will care who she is and what she did before she became an emt.they just want some one who knows what they are doing to care for them.
Jonathan Phillips Jonathan Phillips Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:09:55 PM Wow let's all look down on someone for trying to help people and better themselves, real adult like.
Robb Icely Robb Icely Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:11:44 PM We don't or shouldn't judge a person by how they earn or earned a living, at least not someone who has done nothing illegal. This probably would not have been such an issue if not for certain people making a big deal about it. It's obvious or should be that she cares because after all it's a volunteer service. She should be commended for the change in her life style. Best wishes Tracy, show them what your capable of.
Jarrod Michael Kozee Jarrod Michael Kozee Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:23:18 PM But if she was an investment banker previously, raising rates on home mortgages in order to sell them again at higher profits, she would have been commended. Society has a lot wrong with it if she can't continue her training.
Duane Messner Duane Messner Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:13:08 PM How many of those complaining about a person trying to change their life and help their community don't have skeletons in their closets. If you know what she has done in the PAST, then leave it there. Are people so insecure that they "Judge" a person by what they have done in the past. Stop being so righteous, for as the good book of the christians says " yes that are perfect and have not sinned, then yes may cast the first stone." If every one wasn't so quick to put this information in the news, who would really care what this young lady did in the past.
Tom Harlan Tom Harlan Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:15:19 PM What's wrong with that, she wants to train for the EMT - good for her. Look at all the shady characters in Congress!

Teresa Perry Cook Teresa Perry Cook Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:24:44 PM I think its great she wants to make a new start. And if the public officials ridicule her for her past then they r no better than a racist person telling someone they can't go to church cause they r black....our past is just that...our past....its called the past for a reason...let it stay there..we r not perfect and no where close to living n a perfect world and im sure we've all done stuff we aren't proud of..im rootn for u harmany...u can do this! Prove em all wrong
Miles Feather Miles Feather Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:29:36 PM God bless her and good luck! I don't think any of us that have posted or read this article have not lead a perfect and spotless life. If she passes, has good skills and Cave Spring Rescue Squad in Roanoke, Va doesn't want her she'll be welcomed at our squad. The key point to remember that the patient that she is helping doesn't care what she use to do, they care about what she is doing now!
Jerry Mardock Jerry Mardock Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:30:53 PM If she can pass the classes and do the job, who gives a damn what she used to do? The only stipulation I've ever seen on EMS was the criminal history check and the drug test.

Michael J Glodic III Michael J Glodic III Tuesday, July 17, 2012 12:54:19 PM Last I checked being in adult films was not illegal. If she wants to become a E.M.T and serve her community she should be allowed to. They should be standing beside her and supporting her rather than look for a way to get rid of her.
Scott Childs Scott Childs Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:02:41 PM Way to go, Chase away an EMT just because she did porn. PORN is not a CRIME. Chief Rich Burch you have some issues you need to get over. First and foremost the boner in your pants...
Ken Collins Ken Collins Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:06:18 PM Scott, I think from the story the Chief does support her, but contacted the attorney for legal advice. Can't blame the guy for seeking legal guidance in a day and age where everyone sues. (That's how I interpreted the story.)
Scott Childs Scott Childs Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:21:38 PM The attorney said he reccomends the Chief support her.
Richard Griffin Richard Griffin Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:32:34 PM I support her, The job she is doing now as a EMT and she is doing it for nothing and a service for the community she is serving. Hell our EX President had sex with another woman while he was the president, and that was ok.
Shane Wreck Seiber Shane Wreck Seiber Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:04:36 PM This is political bullshit.... if she is willing to put the time in for school and passes the test, what difference does her past profession have to do with it. This is discrimination plain and simple. And if they decide to terminate her application on a Volunteer Dept because of it, I say, She sue the Fuck out of them.... with all this public attention now, she would win the case with no problems.
Henry Bariteau III Henry Bariteau III Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:08:33 PM What was that saying? Let yea who is without sin cast the first stone? Please, how many people who are complaining have ever done volunteer community service?
Chris Sinderman Chris Sinderman Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:09:26 PM I fully support her if she is willing to put the time and training go for it Tracy and if they for some reason say no to you move on and find a department that will there are plenty of departments in need of E.M.T's and Fire Fighters. so basically I agree with Bob and also I can I have been on fire and rescue for12 years and I don't care about peoples past as long as they put the time and training. Good Luck Tracy!
Kevin K. Harris Kevin K. Harris Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:14:18 PM I guess it will just have to become Harmony Rose Fire & Rescue inc. She has no criminal history? Not a child molester? Not a drug dealer? Has no outstanding warrants? Follows the rules and regulations? I'm sure none of those types have ever gotten into the VFD right? Right. Piss on leadership that is more afraid of losing their job than doing their jobs. Piss on them. They think they might get bad publicity? Just wait till the ACLU gets hold of this... Oh boy.
George S. Robinson III George S. Robinson III Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:58:24 PM I guess they have plenty of Volunteers?? Mundane Dumbasses....>:)
Paul Bernard Jr. Paul Bernard Jr. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:19:49 PM "have volunteer trainees as young as 16 and 17 years old." If these parents make a big deal about Harmony being on the squad with their children, they are the biggest hypocrits ever. "Sure, go ahead and let my son/daughter volunteer train with you guys and see dismemberment, eviseration, etc while at car accidents. But hell no do I want my son/daughter to have the kind of role model who decides to better their lives and do something to help out their community." I would work along beside her any day. Not because of her past, but because she was willing to give it all up just so she could help save people's lives... as a VOLUNTEER. -Fellow EMT and Paramedic Student.
Shawn Mclaughlin Shawn Mclaughlin Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:25:22 PM agreed, sir!
Douglas Burns Douglas Burns Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:23:30 PM How many vollies and career individuals have done not so upstanding things in their past and got away with it, and went on to deliver a baby, save a rescue victim or brought back grandma after she had a heart attack? Shall we all start throwing stones at each other? Sorry if the Chief removes her, then he is a worthless piece of skin. Let the girl alone.
Johnny Nugent Johnny Nugent Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:07:46 PM Who cares about the past? She wants to serve here community and as a volunteer.
Bill Conner Bill Conner Tuesday, July 17, 2012 4:32:45 PM Like I said in an earlier post. Don't hate her because she was smart enough to get paid for it.
Edward Skompski Edward Skompski Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:29:22 PM I know a lot of people who have probably never watch porn who I would not want helping me out in any situation. Let her save lives if that is what she wants to do. We praise criminals who change their lives while in prison, so why not let someone who (by the way) has not broken any laws go do something different.....
Richard Griffin Richard Griffin Tuesday, July 17, 2012 2:29:28 PM It was ok for our past president of the USA to have sex Monica. What the EMT done has no bearing on the job she is doing now and she is doing a service to her community for nothing.

Nancy Van Varick Williams Nancy Van Varick Williams Tuesday, July 17, 2012 6:13:04 PM hey as long as she can do the work and saves lives, who is anybody to say her past has anything to do with being an EMT? Good grief!
Liz Fleiss Liz Fleiss Tuesday, July 17, 2012 9:18:13 PM the past is the past. why can't people leave it alone?
Ronda Owens Vanek Ronda Owens Vanek Tuesday, July 17, 2012 3:01:52 PM She should not be made to feel ashamed of her past. There are more people that watch porn, go to strip clubs, etc... that wouldn't admit to it if there life depended on it. She is making a career change...bottom line. If she can pass the requirements to become an EMT, more power to her!
Keith Kachel Keith Kachel Tuesday, July 17, 2012 3:11:40 PM Anyone who has ever worked in Emergency Services know it takes a certain type of twisted person to be able to handle the type of shit you face on EMS calls. She will fit right in. I bet the people pissing and moaning about this are all the stereotypical over weight pimple faced EMT's and medics that can't get laid from a hooker. I hope she sues the shit out of them for slander and discrimination.
Bradley Abram Thompson Bradley Abram Thompson Tuesday, July 17, 2012 3:34:35 PM As a paramedic, I would not have a problem having her as my partner. I have known some people working for PAID departments with equally as "politically incorrect" backgrounds (perhaps worse) as this young woman. People are seriously getting on her case for VOLUNTEERING? This should not be a newsworthy issue, and if you've ever watched any sort of "adult entertainment" you are in no position to judge (which would probably eliminate all of the people taking offense in the first place). This EMT deserves to be respected just as much as any other EMT/Paramedic/Fire Fighter/Police Officer, etc.. I think it's sad that the people who are often judged the most critically in our society would also be the first ones to try and save your life in a time of need, regardless of your resume...way to go, America.

Troy Parker Troy Parker Tuesday, July 17, 2012 3:57:56 PM If she didn't do anything illegal, WHO really cares. I know a ton of EMT's that weren't on the straight and narrow before becoming EMTs. If she can complete the the training and the back ground check ( DOJ) then she should be allowed to serve. For good sakes if David Lee Roth can make paramedic, she should be able to make EMT.

Jeff Miller Jeff Miller Tuesday, July 17, 2012 4:45:17 PM We are taught not to be judgemental to anyone while one scene, you would think that would extend to the station. I guarantee you that anyone who is protesting against this lady would have a change of heart if they needed an EMT for their emergency.
Brenda McLaurin Brenda McLaurin Tuesday, July 17, 2012 5:07:11 PM I feel for her, unfortunately she is deep in the Bible belt (Jerry Falwell/Liberty Baptist Church/College very near to Roanoke) she is as good as gone...
Jeff Miller Jeff Miller Tuesday, July 17, 2012 5:25:15 PM I certainly hope not as I dont think anyone should be punished for not breaking the law. Many in the biblebelt tend to heed these words....Love you neighbor as you love yourself. There is also that whole "cast the first stone" thing. If the lady is trying to start a new chapter in her life why hinder that?

Catie Holstein Catie Holstein Tuesday, July 17, 2012 9:02:02 PM There are no words for how angry this makes me. So, let me get this straight, "anything that results in public ridicule of the volunteer squads must be avioded", so I'd like to see a question on all volunteer applications asking if potential candidates have participated in, viewed, purchased, or have had any exposure to pornography in their past, and if that's the case, we wouldn't want anything that results in public ridicule of the volunteer squads, therefore they should be excluded from EMS. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. How ridiculous. Let the woman provide care.
Jace Simmonds Jace Simmonds Tuesday, July 17, 2012 10:00:12 PM And what's the problem. Many a person has had to work at whatever it takes to support their family and to get an education. Some don't get things handed to them on a platter. Some don't get the welfare hand me outs. If she is willing to learn, put in the hours and the effort, there should be absolutely no reason she shouldn't be an EMT with their department. It is so difficult to get people to volunteer anymore because of lawsuits and such, but If she wants to do it, then she should be able to..after all, lawsuits go both ways. She shouldn't be discriminated against because of her past work. She will have to develop a tough hide no pun intended) in order to sluff off the deragatory comments that the idiots of this society will throw her way, but if she is up for it, then what's the problem?

And you know, if I ever needed an EMT, when they come rolling up in the ambulance and start to do their thing, I'm NOT going to stop them and say, "Excuse me - before you save that life, could I see your resume, and 3 references while you're at it?" This has gotten blown way out of proportion. She's qualified, she wants to VOLUNTEER for crying out loud. Leave 'er alone :)
Sarah Tucker Sarah Tucker Thursday, July 19, 2012 9:34:28 AM who cares about her past. Past is past. For all we know some othe people that are EMT's/medics could have a record that was hidden because it happened when they were minors. So no reason that she shouldn't be allowed to do a job she wants to do because of something she did in the past.
Jim Lucas Jim Lucas Thursday, July 19, 2012 2:21:30 PM why should she not become a emt what she did is in the past give her a chance chief. the past is the past if she passes all the tests let her work as a emt people don;t volinteer much any more.you probley have trouble getting help.
Charles Jason Watson Charles Jason Watson Thursday, July 19, 2012 4:04:34 PM WOW, Lets not let someone do something to help others because of their past employment, if she was a criminal I could see getting involved, but she has done nothing wrong!
Mac Sauls Mac Sauls Thursday, July 19, 2012 6:25:47 PM Yeah, if that were the case, NONE of us would have jobs. Especially David A. Wells, we all know he's been around... HAHA
Charles Jason Watson Charles Jason Watson Thursday, July 19, 2012 6:28:58 PM I plead the 5th!! lol
Jonathan Farrow Jonathan Farrow Friday, July 20, 2012 2:57:05 AM If they decide to kick her out she will be welcome in Presidio.
Dan White Dan White Friday, July 20, 2012 5:45:00 PM I am so proud reading how real EMS providers will support anyone who pays their dues and does this job. It is the reason I started in this field over 34 years ago, and the reason I am still so proud having done it.
Saturday, July 21, 2012 6:11:27 AM Let her do whatever she wants with her life. If it doesn't have a direct effect on others, and she is capable of doing the work, then nobody has a right to dictate how she leads her life. I guarantee there are people in EMS with worse pasts and more skeletons!
Rachael Krause Rachael Krause Saturday, July 21, 2012 8:23:43 AM I think it's awesome that she's going to be an EMT - I only hope she keeps her breasts in her shirt when she's helping her patients. Although, if I'm dying, I really wouldn't care as long as she's qualified, knows how to do her job, and knows how to do it WELL.
Sam Brooks Sam Brooks Sunday, July 22, 2012 4:56:58 AM I guess, I don't understand. She had a legal occupation in the past. Now she wants to volunteer to be an EMT? Someone is questioning her ability to volunteer because they don't agree with her past occupation? or because somehow her past occupation can effect her ability to volunteer? If she is qualified and can pass the test what is the problem?
Karin Anderson Karin Anderson Sunday, July 22, 2012 5:41:58 AM Leave this woman's past where it belongs. I have been in EMS for over 20 years and I have never had a patient ask me what I did as a previous career before becoming a paramedic. The fact is, they simply do not care. If she can do this job, which many can not, she deserves a chance. I support and encourage her.
Bonnie Cooper Bonnie Cooper Sunday, July 22, 2012 7:35:42 AM Enough Already! She passed the test and she's trying to help others. Past is the past. Let it rest and let her get on with her life! And why the lawyer? What did she do wrong? If your car hits a pole and she's driving behind you are you going to tell her not to touch you because of her past while you wait for an ambulance? Don't be so uptight people!
Matt Stone Matt Stone Sunday, July 22, 2012 4:29:55 PM Everybody has skeletons in their closet. Some, like hers, are aired out for all to see. Until she does something that is unbecoming of our profession, let her practice.
Mandy Mason Mandy Mason Monday, July 23, 2012 5:48:54 AM I am amazed that anything that might bring "ridicule" must be avoided. How many people have gone through life without doing something they might be embarrassed about, or that someone else might be embarrassed by if they found out? Her former career has no bearing on how she will do her job as an EMT. For all those self righteous people who have an objection to her making her life better (and possibly saving yours) - climb down off your cross, use that wood to build a bridge and GET OVER IT!
Kate McDaniel Kate McDaniel Monday, July 23, 2012 5:53:24 AM ahh I miss you Mandy Mason
Cindy Puffenbarger Cindy Puffenbarger Monday, July 23, 2012 9:09:33 AM First off - explain to me who it was that let this information be known in the first place? then I want to know WHY? What bearings does her past have on the fact she wants to change careers in order to help others? The person that felt the public needed to know this unnecessary information obviously has ulterior motives -- are they jealous? or are they just one of the typical, hypocritical, asinine jackasses that feels they are over and above any form of criticism themselves? Speaking as a Nurse/Paramedic, I commend her for her willingness to change to a career in healthcare. It is one of the most physically and mentally demanding fields. I support her decision, and encourage her to not give up. Good Luck Harmony!
Lee Foutz Lee Foutz Sunday, December 09, 2012 7:48:56 PM Why would anyone want to crap on somebody for wanting to improve their lives? It's simple... we are not in a classless society, and those at the top don't want to share it with the ones below them. Of course, all of this assumes that everyone has the same perspective about which end is the top. :)
Iline Rose-Huff Iline Rose-Huff Monday, July 23, 2012 10:49:54 AM She should be supported beause of her present actions not shamed by the past.... Leave the woman alone.
Norris Wayne Simmons Norris Wayne Simmons Wednesday, July 25, 2012 3:51:03 AM Why does everyone want to criticize this woman for her past and then criticize her again when she tries to make a positive change?
Ross Schacher Ross Schacher Saturday, July 28, 2012 11:44:21 AM Good grief. The ONLY worry I would have would be "Is she competent?". If she is, then who gives a flying f*** at a rolling donut WHAT she did in the past, or, for that matter, what she did last night? People obsess way too much over this sex thing in this country.
Keith Thomas Locke Keith Thomas Locke Saturday, July 28, 2012 11:52:49 AM Yup....
Liz McFeeters Liz McFeeters Saturday, July 28, 2012 1:42:09 PM Something we agree on! As long as she's taken the courses and is qualified and competent what's it matter what her last career was?
Becka Green Reed Becka Green Reed Saturday, July 28, 2012 1:54:11 PM This is similar to the teacher that did porn in his off time. If it doesn't affect their day jobs, who gives a crap?!
Jeff Lawson Jeff Lawson Friday, August 10, 2012 8:27:20 PM how many people do sleep their way to the top of a company to get ahead if she does pass her test good for her why do people have to judged other when they don't do it them selves (shame on those who judged others) I used to be a volunteer fire fighter here in sydney and was accused of doing something that I didn't do that I had to get a investigation done by an independant investigator into my issue and I was found not guilty because there was nothing to investigate at all and those who made the false accusation well nothing was done to them so I left and never to return to volunteer ever again so I'm saying leave her alone if you can't do it or don't want to do it shut the hell up (you want to bes) she giving up something to become something for her community.
Jeff Lawson Jeff Lawson Saturday, August 11, 2012 5:49:20 AM this person is leaving a negative in a positive and there are people in this community that are stopping her from doing it i want to say to you people there in the us get behind her and give your support to her
Allen Troy Turner Allen Troy Turner Sunday, August 12, 2012 8:53:01 PM what's the differance between her past and the past of many tv evangalist caught in the back seat of a car with a hooker (sorry jimmy). they continue to preach because they were and are forgiven' Grow up!
Shelia Spears Shelia Spears Sunday, August 12, 2012 9:12:07 PM Quit judging people..that was in the past...move on people
Jillian Martinez Jillian Martinez Sunday, August 12, 2012 9:21:48 PM Well they better ban all those hot calendars! Hehe
Allen Troy Turner Allen Troy Turner Sunday, August 12, 2012 9:23:34 PM look at it this way, She can still give happy endings!
K.l. Jenkins K.l. Jenkins Tuesday, January 01, 2013 11:32:48 AM Leave her alone.she wants to help people
Keith Stoneberger Keith Stoneberger Tuesday, January 01, 2013 2:38:39 PM You know that are gonna be some drunk redknecks calling in needing help to see if she shows up....... on the serious side, I can see the complaints if she was a meth head.....
Mike Ledgerwood Mike Ledgerwood Tuesday, January 01, 2013 4:49:50 PM This wouldn't be an issue if they didn't make it an issue. There is nothing criminal about being a porn star.
Paul Aston Jones Paul Aston Jones Wednesday, January 02, 2013 3:25:23 PM Pathetic, there's a jobsworth one in every job we certainly have them in ours..... as long as she is qualified and does her job to the best of her ability why the fuss......... I bet there are ems with far more serious "offences" in the job........................
Ross Shawn Rogers Ross Shawn Rogers Wednesday, January 02, 2013 10:05:43 PM WDBJ7 deserves a boycott for this. EMS providers in this community should organize a campaign to contact their major sponsors and ask them to withdraw their support unless they apologize to Tracy and run a series about the sacrifices the EMTs in that community make. They work hard to ensure high quality pre-hospital care, and this is the thanks they get. I'm willing to help. Let me know who to call.
Sarah Rayner Sarah Rayner Saturday, March 09, 2013 12:18:32 PM Yet no one comments on how they found out about her past..
