Doctor reveals story behind viral photo of boy clinging to medic

A doctor on the scene recalls the moment a medic brought in the boy who clung to him crying "I want my father," and the fate of him and his siblings

The following is a blog entry from a medic working in Palestine. While it shows one side of an on-going conflict, we felt the medics story interesting enough to share.

The Electronic Intifada

GAZA CITY — Thursday night, 17 July, was the heaviest yet since Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began almost two weeks ago.

Dozens of people arrived to Gaza City’s al-Shifa hospital, where I was on shift that night. Some arrived torn to pieces, some beheaded, some disfigured beyond recognition, although still alive and breathing.

Seemingly indiscriminate artillery fire, a new element in Israel’s assault, had exacted a heavy toll on civilians.

The medical staff were lucky to get a break of less than half an hour. Some spent it watching the flares and bombs Israel was raining on the eastern neighborhoods of Gaza City, while others refueled with coffee or lay down for a few moments.

Aaron Haber Aaron Haber Monday, July 21, 2014 5:44:50 PM It's a sad state of affairs there but Hamas has brought this on their own people.
Elana Toboul Elana Toboul Monday, July 21, 2014 6:09:07 PM It is sad for the people living in Gaza but Hamas has made a choice for them that their lives are not of value. They are being used as human shields. Hamas launches rockets from inside hospitals, schools, homes, and other civilian targets. Israel had no choice but to protect themselves. No other country would ever allow a terrorist organization to rain rockets down on populated areas full of civilians with no regard for human life. Hamas sends rockets blindly into Israel with the intention to kill as many Israeli citizens as possible. Israel is the only country that notifies their targets that they are going to be targeted and pushes for evacuation. It's a horrible situation and the world should be more outraged at Hamas than they are!!

Elana Toboul Elana Toboul Tuesday, July 22, 2014 4:29:37 AM Sorry but I don't feel bad for hamas. I don't sympathize with terrorists.
Joe Kretschmer Joe Kretschmer Tuesday, July 22, 2014 7:21:05 AM Pure frustration from HAMAS. What are they supposed to do? Israel treats Palestinians like animals and takes their land.
Joe Kretschmer Joe Kretschmer Tuesday, July 22, 2014 7:22:44 AM Elana Toboul Israel is the original and continuing terrorist state. They murdered Palestinian villages in the beginning to get the land and they haven't stopped since.
Jonathan Weinberg Jonathan Weinberg Tuesday, July 22, 2014 10:30:27 AM You're right Joe. I guess Hamas really has no alternative but to store rockets in schools and hospitals so that they can launch them from Palestinian population centers towards Israeli population centers. What else could they do?
Jesse Bell Jesse Bell Tuesday, July 22, 2014 1:34:35 PM Jonathan Weinberg If I were Hamas, I'd continue bombing Israel, because Joe supports me in bombing innocents!
Cv De Knechten Cv De Knechten Tuesday, July 22, 2014 5:55:42 PM one big element....STOP THIS CRAZY STUPID FIGHT !!!!!!!!
Chris Williams Chris Williams Tuesday, July 22, 2014 8:21:41 PM The Palestinian people are the biggest bunch of self-hating humans on the planet.... Given a choice between Democracy and radical Islam, they chose a backwards fundamentalist philosophy of death and destruction. So they decide to support a bunch of man-dress wearing idiots from the stone age, who think somehow lobbing completely inaccurate rockets and blowing themselves up is a good way to achieve geo-political goals... you dumbasses have only yourselves to blame for your suffering. Police your own, kick out the militants, and you'd be surprised what you can achieve when you stop training your children to hate and blow themselves up....
Mark Kenes Mark Kenes Wednesday, July 23, 2014 12:32:11 AM War is Ugly no matter who is to blame.
Jason Smith Jason Smith Tuesday, July 29, 2014 4:39:33 PM Anytime there are small children involved, it becomes heart wrenchin g, but this story is a one sided political/religious story. I feel bad for that young boy, but the fault for his injuries and suffering falls on Hamas, not Israel like the story so onesidedly projects .
Dan Wildman Dan Wildman Tuesday, July 29, 2014 6:10:29 PM Well, EMS1, I see that you have jumped on board with the Lame Stream Media in accusing Israel of being the aggressors. You people have officially lost all credibility in my opinion, and I will no longer follow your news.
