ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. — A Woodbridge, Va., man died Friday after his motorcycle collided with an ambulance on Route 198 near the Maryland City Shopping Center, Anne Arundel County police said.

Gene Anthony Sergent, 20, was driving his 1998 Suzuki Katana east on Route 198 just before 11 a.m. when the motorcycle struck the ambulance as it was leaving the shopping center, police said. The ambulance, driven by Darrel Evan Blount, 42, of Washington, was crossing the eastbound lanes to turn left onto westbound Route 198.

|Sergent suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at Laurel Regional Hospital. Blount was treated for leg injuries at Concentra Medical Center. Another person in the ambulance, Eric Sigmar Schulkowski, 32, of Arnold, was not hurt.

The ambulance, stationed at the Maryland City firehouse, was not responding to a call and did not have its flashing lights or sirens on, police said.

An initial investigation indicates that Sergent drove his motorcycle through a red light into the intersection and that the ambulance had a green light, police said. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
