5 injured in Calif. ambulance crash

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Five people were hurt after an ambulance was broadsided by a car in Palo Alto on Tuesday night, police said.
Police responded to the accident at the intersection of El Camino Real and Page Mill Road at 10 p.m., said Sgt. Rich Bullerjahn of the Palo Alto Police Department.
The ambulance, operated by American Medical Response, was transporting an elderly patient from El Camino Hospital in Mountain View to Stanford hospital, Bullerjahn said.
As the ambulance traveled northbound on El Camino Real, it slowed down with its emergency lights and sirens on before going through the intersection on a red light.
A Toyota Corolla drove through the intersection on a green light, Bullerjahn said, and slammed into the ambulance, causing it to land on its side.
The five people were transported to Stanford hospital, but no one had life-threatening injuries, Bullerjahn said.
Police officers were at Stanford Hospital getting statements Tuesday night. No alcohol appeared to be involved in the crash, Bullerjahn said.
