Ohio firefighter/EMT, two others hurt in wreck

By Martha Hardcastle
The Dayton Daily News

UNION, Ohio — A Union firefighter/emergency medical technician, a woman and her son were recovering from a two-vehicle crash Thursday, Oct. 2, outside the Union Depot drive-through, the fire chief said.

Firefighter/EMT Doug Kyvik, 47, and the woman were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

Her 4-year-old son was taken to Children's Medical Center following the accident, which occurred about 4 p.m. in the 100 block of North Main Street, Police/Fire Chief Mike Blackwell said.

The names of the woman and child were not released. Their conditions were not immediately known, but she and the child remained in those respective hospitals Thursday night, said Trooper David Brown, with the Ohio Highway Patrol post in Dayton.

Kyvik, a 15-year veteran Union fire department veteran, was treated and released, Blackwell said.

Kyvik may have been responding to the firehouse when the Dodge SUV he was driving T-boned the Ford pickup truck the woman was driving as it pulled out of the drive-through, Blackwell said.

Investigators are not immediately sure whether the firefighter/EMT, who was driving his personal vehicle, was responding for duty or simply headed somewhere else.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, Brown and Blackwell said.
