Police: Colo. paramedic shoots man, then treats him

The Associated Press

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Fort Collins police say a paramedic accidentally shot and wounded a man during a fight and then gave him first aid until authorities arrived.

Cody Bettcher was arrested on suspicion of assault and menacing.

He's free on $7,500 bail.

Police say Bettcher confronted Derek Patterson early Sunday for allegedly shoving Bettcher's sister. Police say Bettcher's handgun accidentally discharged and wounded Patterson in the shoulder.

Police say Patterson had surgery but his condition wasn't available. Authorities say he too may face charges.

No phone number could be found for either man and jail officials had no record of an attorney for the 24-year-old Bettcher.

Bettcher is a Fort Collins mechanic and a volunteer firefighter and paramedic in nearby Wellington.
