Man arrested for trying to move Tenn. ambulance

Paramedics heard the engine start and were able to stop 65-year-old Warren Melamed

News Sentinel

MT. JULIET, Tenn. — A man hopped into a Wilson County ambulance that was blocking his car and tried to move it while paramedics were loading a patient.

Mt. Juliet police said that paramedics heard the engine start and were able to stop 65-year-old Warren Melamed before he could move the ambulance.

Melamed, of Brentwood, was arrested on Saturday on one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Melamed told officers he was mad because the ambulance was blocking his car.

Shawn Moran Shawn Moran Thu Feb 2 13:26:07 PST 2012 There are times (rarely) that you cannot shut the truck off, but it is a prime example of why you should.

Just remember to take the keys next you leave the ambulance so people who are up set because the ambulance won't move them because someelse is sick or injuries.

Luke Asselin Luke Asselin Thursday, February 02, 2012 12:23:38 PM Dont have to turn off the truck.. just press the anti-theft button.. take the keys with you... and lock the doors :)
Thomas Wharton Thomas Wharton Thursday, February 02, 2012 6:47:14 PM This is great and fanastic. There should be more penalities for tampering with emergency vehicles. I have had someone try and move the truck but I managed to not so politely move his person out of the driver seat. You should not have to worry about someone moving an ambulance because it is an inconvience. If someone moved a police car or a fire truck there would be no problem with charges why should an ambulance be the expection?
Jean Bellavance Jean Bellavance Friday, February 03, 2012 6:17:56 AM We live in a rural area and run on our local volunteer ambulance squad. There have been times when we have blocked a whole road in one of the towns we service. I can safely say that in the 24 yrs I have been on the only time our ambulance was moved was for another emergency vehicle. This guy should show some respect.

KevinAmy Johnson KevinAmy Johnson Monday, February 06, 2012 7:44:39 AM Um, they have had remote locking doors locks for how many decades now? It is irresponsible to leave any vehicle unlocked, especially an emergency vehicle. Spend the money and make your ambulances secure while on scene. Oh and don't park like every call is life and death, part of being professional is knowing when you need to block half the blocks parking. Don't get me started on ambulances parked in seven eleven spots like a mini van with soccer kids getting slurpees, NOSE IN! It's not a car and you should avoid backing as much as possible, and looking like a tool for half the city to shake their heads at as they drive by. I'm a firm believer that you can judge how good an EMS system is by how they park, think about it.

Craig Ward Craig Ward Thursday, February 09, 2012 8:51:01 PM How about Grand theft auto instead of just unauthorized use of a vehicle. People actually being punished for their crimes would go a long way to stop crime.
